Gastroenterology & Endoscopy
The Endoscopy Unit is a facility whereby planned admissions are carried out, on patients whom the consultants have seen in their rooms, or are referred directly by their GP.
In certain cases public patients who are on the National Treatment Purchase Fund List are also included for procedures.
The aim of the procedures is to diagnose, and in some cases treat where possible certain conditions e.g. stomach ulcers, colon polyps, colon and stomach cancers and strictures.
Intravenous sedations is administered by either the Consultant or a designated anaesthetist for the procedure with the exception of flexible cystoscopies which are performed under local anaesthetic.
The patients are transferred from the Day Unit for their procedure and then returned to the Day Unit afterwards for recovery.
